A faulty turn signal relay can cause a variety of symptoms, including: the turn signal not flashing at all, the signal remaining on without flashing, flashing at an abnormal rate (too fast or too slow), one side of the turn signal not working, and the dashboard indicator lights not working. In some cases, you may also hear unusual sounds from the relay or notice overheating and a burning odor.
1. Connect the tester to a power source, usually a car battery: the black alligator clip is connected to the negative terminal and the red alligator clip is connected to the positive terminal.
2. When the tester is connected to a power source, the green light is on: normal; the red light is on: a fault has occurred.
To connect an automotive relay to a socket or wiring harness, first make sure the relay’s pinout matches the socket’s connections. Typically, a relay has four pins: pin 30 (power input), pin 87 (load output), pin 85 (coil ground), and pin 86 (coil control). Connect pin 30 to the positive power source, pin 87 to the load (such as a light or motor), pin 85 to ground, and pin 86 to the control switch. Plug the relay into the socket and make sure the connections are secure.
The main function of a car relay is to control large currents with small currents, enabling the switching of various devices in the car’s electrical system, such as lights, air conditioning, and starters. It helps protect the circuit, prevent overloads from damaging electrical components, simplifies circuit design, and enhances system flexibility, ensuring the safety and proper operation of the vehicle’s electrical devices.
1. The correct current and voltage ratings of the automotive relay;
2. The load type of the auto relay (inductive or resistive load);
3. The number of pins and wiring method;
4. The operating temperature and environmental adaptability of the car relay;
5. The switching capacity, brand quality and protection characteristics of the car relay;
6. The mechanical and electrical life of the auto relay.
4 pin relays: Suitable for simple switching applications (such as light control, fan, etc.), when activated, Pin 30 and Pin 87 are connected.
5 pin relays: Adds a normally closed contact for circuits that require dual switching or backup functions, which can provide backup connections when the relay is not activated, suitable for more complex circuits. When the relay is activated, Pin 30 and Pin 87 are connected; when it is not activated, Pin 30 and Pin 87a are connected.
Generally, the lifespan of a car relay can be divided into mechanical and electrical lifespans. The mechanical lifespan refers to the number of times the switch contacts of the relay are used without a current load, typically ranging from 100,000 to 1,000,000 cycles. The electrical lifespan refers to the lifespan of the relay when carrying a load current. Typically, the electrical lifespan is shorter than the mechanical lifespan, usually ranging from 10,000 to 100,000 cycles. Both lifespans depend on the design and quality of the relay.
The price of car relays is influenced by multiple factors, including relay type, current and voltage ratings, brand, purchase quantity, and environmental conditions. Choosing the right relay based on your needs can help optimize costs.
1. Confirm the problem: Make sure the relay is indeed damaged, you can use a tester to detect it.
2. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery: For safety reasons, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery first.
3. Locate and unplug the relay: Consult the vehicle manual to find the location of the relay.
4. Check the socket: Check the relay socket for damage or dirt.
5. Install the new relay and connect the battery: Plug the new relay into the socket, make sure it is firm, and restore power.
6. Test the relay: Start the vehicle and test whether the relay is working properly.
The shelf life of an automotive relay usually depends on its quality, usage environment, and storage conditions. Generally speaking, the shelf life of an automotive relay is 2 to 5 years, but this is only a rough reference time.
