Magnetic latching relays (also called a bistable relays) is a relay that maintains its state (either “on” or “off”) without continuous power. It has two stable states and uses pulses to switch between these states. This means that once the relay is turned on or off, it will remain in that state until another pulse is applied, even if the control power is turned off.
Latching relays work by using an electromagnetic coil that holds its position after power is applied. Relays typically have two coils: one to set the relay (turn it on) and one to reset the relay (turn it off). When a pulse is sent to the “set” coil, the relay switches to the “on” state. When a pulse is sent to the “reset” coil, the relay switches to the “off” state. The relay holds its position in either state without the need for continuous power.
Energy efficiency: Since a latching relay only requires a single pulse to change state, it does not continuously consume power.
Low power consumption: Ideal for applications where power conservation is required.
Memory function: It retains its state even after power is removed.
Longer life: Since the relay does not rely on continuous current, it has a longer lifespan than traditional relays.
Reliable control system: It is ideal for systems that need to remember a specific state.
Latching relay: It retains its state (“on” or “off”) after the control signal is removed, until a pulse is received to change its state (set or reset). It is energy-efficient, consuming power only when switching states.
Non-latching relay: It remains in a continuously closed state without power, thus consuming more power.
Latching relays are widely used in applications that require energy saving and state retention. For example, they are often used in smart plugs, smart panels, access control systems, security systems, and industrial controls to maintain a switch state without continuous power. Since they only consume power when switching states, they are also very suitable for use in battery-powered devices or solar systems to help save energy and provide reliable state retention.
To reset a latching relay, simply apply a short pulse to the reset coil. By sending a pulse signal to the reset coil through a control circuit (such as a button or switch), the relay will switch to the “off” state (or reset state) and remain in that state until the next pulse changes.
To connect the relay to the circuit, connect the power supply to the common terminal (C) of the relay, and then control the load through the normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) contacts. The two coils of the relay (set and reset terminals) are connected to control switches or a microcontroller, which sends pulse signals to switch the relay between the set and reset states.
*Ensure that the relay’s coil voltage matches the control circuit’s voltage.
*Make sure the relay’s load terminal voltage and current specifications meet the load requirements.
*Allow for sufficient current and voltage margin to avoid overloading.
*Consider the special needs of the operating environment, such as temperature, humidity, and other factors.
Yes, bistable latch relays can be customized with accessories to help optimize relay installation, protection, retention or thermal isolation.
Bistable relay has two stable states, which are switched and maintained by a pulse signal. It is suitable for applications that need to maintain the state for a long time, such as a remote control switch.
